You’ll Hear My Voice Wherever You Are

Sarah (with her head on her favourite pillow): Ummm, hello, Abba!

God: Hello child! Tired from your day at work?

Sarah (will be quoted as S): Yes. There was just so much to do. We had a meeting for two hours and then all the urgent work that sprouted from it. There was something I missed from last week. I finished up that too.

God: Hey, hey! Calm down. Take a deep breath and relax. Aren’t you glad the day is over?

S: Yes, Abba. It was heavy, but it’s over (with a tired grin). But I know I haven’t spoken to you all day.

God: Alright. Well, before you go to sleep. Let’s do something together.

S: Yes. Yes. What is it?

God: Tell me one thing you were grateful for today.

S: Hhhmmm!

God: Okay, one thing you were sad it happened?

S: Hhhmmm!

God: Alright, something you wish had happened?

S: Hhhmmm! (embarrassed by now) Abba, I can’t think of anything.

God: That’s okay. Don’t feel embarrassed. I’m your Father. I know your thoughts. You know I won’t judge you, right?

S: Yes. Yes.

God: Alright, let’s do something else. What did you do first this morning?

S: Hhhhmmm…I checked my phone (with an awkward grin)

God: I know! And what did you read during your metro ride?

S: I checked out some Facebook videos (again, an awkward grin)

God: And during lunch time?

S: I completed some office project that’s been pending.

God: And just before you hit the bed?

S: I completed a Netflix series that a friend recommended.

God: So, so, do you think you had time to talk to me?

S: Oh no, Abba! I think I understand what you mean.

God: Well, well, that was a quick realization. But hey, listen, I’m not here to condemn you. Don’t let the thief make you feel guilty.

S: Woah! How well you know my thoughts!?

God: I’m your Abba. I’m always at your door knocking to see if you’ll open the door, to see if you’ll hear my voice. Remember what I said in the book of John, My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27) You are my sheep and I know you hear my voice. But my child, don’t let the responsibilities and worries of this life block you from listening to my knock.

S: Yes, Abba. I get what you are saying.

God: When you wake up in the morning, say hello to me. I’d love that. I don’t sleep, you know that. When you walk around the office, talk to me. I’m walking with you. When you’re in your room, whisper to me. I’m standing right beside you. You’ll hear my voice — sometimes, just a gentle breeze, sometimes, a Scripture verse, sometimes, an email from your boss saying how much s/he values you, sometimes, a text from your friend saying how good a person you are. It’s all me!

S: Abba, I’m so overwhelmed right now.

God: Yes, child. I have something more. I’m with you when you feel lonely and rejected. But I am also with you when you are surrounded by the people you love. I’m always around. Whisper to me. Cry out to me. Laugh with me. You can lie on the mat saying nothing. Or you can dance around. I love every bit of you.

S: Abba, I love you.

God: I know that, my child. We can sit together in the garden and you can tell me all that you want. Or we could watch the flowers bloom and see the brook flow through the bed of rocks. I could tell you new and mysterious things that you have never heard of.

S: Or you could tell me why you sent Your Son to die for such a sinful world?

God: Ah! You know that already. I love this world so much that I had to send my Son to die and be raised to life again. I want every person on this earth to spend the eternity with me. Can you imagine what heaven would feel like, with everyone you know and don’t know?

S: Wow. Wow. Wow. Abba, why did I not do this before?

God: Hey, no guilt, okay? We can start tonight. We can start now.

S: Thank you, Abba. Thank you.
